St. Mary's, Pettigo

The first church in Pettigo was built on the site of the present St. Mary's. Fr. Alexander Mc Donnell began the work in 1810 (having just completed a church in Mulleek).

St. Joseph's, Lettercran St. Joseph's, Lettercran

Fr. Neal Ryan, Parish Priest from 1827 until 1877, built the first church in Lettercran where Mass was celebrated for teh first time on St. Patrick's Day, 1834. The church was reconstructed at least once and the bell tower was added in 1905.

Carn Graveyard

There are burial grounds around both churches but previous to that both Protestants and Catholics were buried in Carn graveyard. (Burials still take place there). In the corner of the graveyard is a very fine example of a 'scalan', a shelter used for the celebration of Mass before the churches were built.

Lough Derg, the Sanctuary of St. Patrick, a place of pilgrimage dating to Medieval times lies among the hills in the northern part of the parish.
